A Sweet Retention Offer for My Amex Hilton Surpass Card

Amex Hilton Surpass Retention Offer

Amex Hilton Surpass Retention Offer

American Express has been great with bonuses recently, including retention offers. The $95 annual fee recently posted on my Amex Hilton Surpass card, so I logged into account and opened up the chat feature. This is a much easier way in my opinion to ask for a retention offer. But you can also call in, if that’s your thing.

I explained the the online agent that I’m considering closing my Amex Hilton Surpass card, and asked if there are any offers available in my account. I was the transferred to a Membership Consulting professional, which is usually a good sign that you will receive a retention offer.

That agent asked a few things such as:

  • What attracted you to this Card when you originally signed up?
  • Are you expecting to stay at Hilton in near future?
  • How do you pay for your everyday expenses like Groceries, Dining etc?

He also explained the benefits and earning rates that the Hilton Surpass card provides, and then asked if I think I can earn the value from your card and keep it active. I said yes, and asked if there are any offers available to offset the annual fee. And finally the offer came.

Offer

Here’s the offer that I was given:

You can earn 60,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points after you spend $3,000 or more in eligible purchases on your Card within 3 months of accepting this offer, starting today. The 60,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points will be credited to your account 8 to 12 weeks after the purchase requirement has been met. Your account must not be past due or cancelled at the time of fulfillment of any offers.

If American Express determines that you have engaged or intend to engage in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with the loyalty offer, including if you cancel or downgrade your account within 12 months after acquiring it or if you return purchases you made to meet the threshold amount, we reserve the right to withhold Hilton Honors Bonus Points from your Hilton Surpass account and cancel any accounts you have with us.

Purchases may fall outside of the 3 month period in some cases, such as a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date you made the transaction. If this happens these purchases will not be counted toward your eligibility for this offer.

Eligible purchases are purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person payments, or purchases of other cash equivalents.

I accepted the offer! The spend will also count towards the 15,000 in annual purchases required to earn a Weekend Night Reward.

    • 3X on all other eligible purchases.

Guru’s Wrap-up

I think this is one of the best retention offers I have seen for the Amex Hilton Surpass card. It’s always a good idea to call in or chat online for a retention offer when your annual fee is due. The latter is my preferred method. Even on no-fee cards, American Express has been giving out retention offers. So even if you really plan to close a card, a good retention offer could change your mind.

Just be prepared to have some answers ready on why you like the card in question, why you no longer use it as much, etc.

Let me know in the comments if you have been able to get a similar or better Amex Hilton Surpass retention offer.
