Adyen tackles golf payments | Payments Dive

Dutch payments processing giant Adyen is delving deeper into the world of golf payments, a space already served by a handful of niche payment players.

The company announced Friday a partnership with the equipment and apparel company Worldwide Golf. The Santa Ana, California-based chain of golf stores will now use Adyen's payment terminals across its roughly 100 U.S. locations.

But if Adyen wants a bigger foothold in the golf industry beyond Worldwide Golf, it has its work cut out for it competing with multiple payments firms that specialize in golf payments. Those companies include Fremont, California-based GolfTranz; Blue Ash, Ohio-based foreUp; and Roswell, Georgia-based Golf Pro Payments.

Adyen's president for North America Davi Strazza acknowledged the difficulty in competing with those companies in an interview Thursday.

“You're going to have many businesses that go very niche in that vertical,” he said. “They're gonna go to golf (businesses) and say ‘here is an entire solution stack for you to run your golf club across all different dimensions that includes payments’ and that is really powerful.”

Nonetheless, he is confident his company can compete with these niche players who have expertise in the golf space. The company aims to offer convenience and efficiency to the customers, he said.

An Adyen spokesperson stressed in an email that their service platforms serve all manner of businesses, not just golf companies.

“In addition to supporting retailers, Adyen for Platforms supports those platforms that want the best experience, whether they’re a software-as-a-service platform or a service provider focused on golf payments,” the spokesperson said.

On that front, it was important for Worldwide Golf to have a single payment option across all of its stores, company Chief Financial Officer and Chief Strategy Officer Dan Appell said in a news release announcing the partnership.

“As we look to modernize and streamline our payment process, it was essential to find a partner that could unify our transactions across in-store and digital touch points,” he said in the release.

Adyen’s terminals will also provide consumer information to help the golf store chain personalize customers’ experiences.

Spokespeople for foreUP, GolfTranz and Pro Golf Payments did not respond to requests for comment.

“We’ve been partnering with more businesses in this space,” Strazza said. An Adyen spokesperson said they could not provide any specific names, but said the company has been working with golf brands since at least 2019.

Adyen has also partnered with sporting goods chains with a broader clientele, notably Dick's Sporting Goods, a Pittsburgh-based nationwide chain with about 850 locations, according to its website.

The Dutch firm has modified its services for other specific industries as well, Strazza said. "That is essentially the infrastructure for a business that is operating in a niche vertical to embed payments and embed finance," he said.
