Mercury Insurance founder George Joseph dies at 104

Under his tenure as CEO, Mercury went public in 1985 and expanded beyond California in 1989. The company listed on the NYSE in 1996 and crossed $1 billion in written premiums in 1997. By the time Joseph stepped down as CEO in 2006, premiums had reached $3 billion. By 2025, direct premiums written had grown to $5.98 billion across 11 states, according to the company's SEC annual report.

California accounts for 82 percent of that total - the largest concentration of any state in Mercury's personal lines book.
