Mercury Insurance has announced the appointment of Simon Zhang (pictured) to the newly created position of chief data and analytics officer.

In his new role, Zhang is tasked with refining Mercury’s approach to data science, encompassing predictive analytics, infrastructure, data security, and compliance. His goal is to leverage the company’s six decades of accumulated data to innovate and improve business processes, making information more accessible across the organization.

Before his engagement with Mercury, Zhang co-founded GrowingIO, where he served as chief data scientist. His extensive experience also includes a leadership position at LinkedIn as a senior director of business analytics.

According to the social network, Zhang’s professional background also includes a career in medicine as a neurosurgeon, where he conducted over 300 surgeries. His appointment is part of Mercury’s strategic initiative to harness advanced data analytics to foster business expansion, enhance product offerings, and more effectively serve its policyholders.

“This newly created position is the latest in a series of investments Mercury is making to reimagine how we use data and unlock the power of our deep data resources.

Combining our proprietary data with the kinds of new data technologies that are being developed everyday will help Mercury become an innovative market leader,” Mercury Insurance COO and president Victor Joseph said.
