New Best Airport in the World
There’s a new best airport in the world. Singapore’s Changi Airport has lost its top spot in Skytrax’s annual ranking of the world’s best airports, which it held for almost a decade.
Qatar’s Hamad International Airport (HIA) has been awarded the “Best Airport in the World” title for 2201. The Doha airport climbed from third position to lead the global ranking. HIA has also received titles of “Best Airport in the Middle East”, “Best Airport 25 to 35 million Passengers”, “Best Airport Staff in the Middle East”, and “COVID-19 Airport Excellence”.
This year, Changi placed only third. The airport has toped the list for years thanks to the ease of travel, comfort and top-notch food and drink options.
Doha moving to the top spot in not a coincidence. The Qatari government has invested heavily in both its national carrier Qatar Airways and its airport, with pretty spectacular results. Travelers on Qatar Airways who have a connecting flight at HIA can enjoy free city tours, free accommodation and food depending on the length of the layover and a VIP transfer service where airline employees meet visitors as they de-plane and guide them through the airport.
Airports in Asia and Europe dominated the rest of the 2021 list. Japan was voted best-rated country overall, with three airports in the top 10, including both of Tokyo’s airports (Narita and Haneda). No U.S. airports made the top 10 list. Canada’s Vancouver International Airport took the title of “Best Airport in North America.”
