The Society of Mortgage Professionals has appointed Carols Thibaut as chair and Liz Syms as vice-chair.

Thibaut was previously chief executive of 360Dotnet and prior to that, group managing director of Lifetime Group.

He first joined the board of the Society of Mortgage Professionals in 2019.

Thibaut replaces joint managing partner of Chadney Bulgin David Thomas, who is stepping down from the role after two years.

Connect Mortgages and Connect for Intermediaries chief executive Liz Syms has been named as vice-chair.

She set up the mortgage network in 2012 which now supports more than 250 brokers working in the mainstream market as well as specialist areas such as complex buy-to-let, commercial and bridging.

Former chair David Thomas says: “I was honoured to be invited to take the inaugural chair of the Society of Mortgage Professionals some two years ago, during which time we have created a clear structure while steering through a pandemic.

“I’m delighted to pass the chair to Carlos, who I know will drive the Society further forward.”

Thibaut says: “Following the illustrious David Thomas will be a considerable challenge, but one that I’m looking forward to.

“We have an important role to play in supporting and promoting professionalism.

“Championing the benefits of seeking out professional advice must be at the heart of what we do.

“We have an extremely talented, experienced and skilled board and I am genuinely excited about the opportunities for advisers, professional advice and the Society over the coming years.”

Liz Syms says: “Helping advisers to increase their skills and professionalism while championing the consumer is the key aim and differentiator of the Society.

“I am really pleased to be part of the board and I am looking forward as the vice-chair to supporting Carlos, to increase the profile of the good work that the Society does.”

Chartered Insurance Institute membership director Mark Hutchinson says: “I would like to thank David for his excellent work shaping the professional body’s support for the advice community during the challenging times of the last two years.”

“I look forward to working with Carlos and Liz as they continue to deepen our engagement with the mortgage advice community and further strengthen the relevant and insightful support and learning we offer

the sector.”
